From Maine author Cathryn Falwell, it's a peaceful day at the pond as ten timid turtles bask in the sun.  As they are startled by the activities of other nearby creatures, the number of turtles on a log in a pond decreases from ten to one.

This is the beginning of the vocabulary avalanche! Your child is on the verge of learning so many words a day that you won’t be able to keep up! The next two years is the biggest explosion of vocabulary learning that a child will have in their entire life. Reading books with interesting language and that answer questions your child asks you can help build both vocabulary and knowledge about the world. Your child will be asking lots (and lots!) of questions. How you find out the answers together will show your child that their questions are valuable and that books and reading the internet can help us learn.

Why did we select this book?

In the Maine classic, ten turtles drop off a log one by one. Surrounding their slow countdown are pond creatures that any toddler will want to spot. Not only does the book introduce the numbers 1-10, it is also a feast of bold images and rhyming action words. What do you have in your house that could represent 10 turtles? You might decorate 10 paper plates to look like turtles. Line them up on a rolled-up blanket and have your child "act out" the story by dropping one turtle at a time off the "log."
