Get ready to roll through the alphabet with a jaunty cast of busy little peas. Featuring a range of zippy characters from Acrobat Peas to Zoologist Peas, this delightful picture book highlights a variety of interests, hobbies, and careers—each one themed to a letter of the alphabet—and gives a wonderful sense of the colorful world we live in. Children will have so much fun poring over the detailed scenes that they won’t even realize they’re learning the alphabet along the way!

What’s Happening at this Age

  • Recognizing familiar voices
  • Gazing at high contrast pictures
  • Looking at faces

Your little one is just getting used to the world around them. That includes getting to know YOU in a new way! Up until now, your baby has only heard your voice. Your voice is the most important thing in their world right now. Singing and talking to them as you soothe them reinforces that connection. Reading simple books, even though they don’t understand them, gives you another way of sharing your connection. As their vision develops, they will be increasingly drawn to faces. When you talk with them, putting your face within 12 inches of theirs will help them connect your face to the sound that they already love!

Why did we select this book?

This is a book to be used throughout your child's baby, toddler, and even school years. We did not select this book for the Birth Bag so that you would teach your baby his ABC's from day one. We selected this book so that you know that learning letters and letter sounds are the foundation for your child's future learning. Reading aloud introduces your child to all the wonderful sounds of the letters. This book in particular organizes letter sounds into a wonderful collection of who we are and the work we do, introducing new words to your child's vocabulary. The words and rhymes make for a delightful read-aloud.

Related Activities

Each time you open this book you are going to see something new. The details in the illustrations are silly and satisfying and are too detailed for your baby to focus on right now. As they grow, your baby’s ability to see and understand the pictures will also grow. Once they are older, you will have a great time talking with each other about what each one of the peas is doing. The more words your baby hears, the more likely they will be a strong student when they are older. Use this and other books to speak aloud words that you would not use in everyday speech. Words from “acrobats” to “zoologists” will inspire your child’s love of words and curiosity in the greater world.
