Why raising readers Has Selected This Book
We liked how bold Caroline Mockford's illustrations are and that she chose to illustrate this simple text with children and animals from around the world. In a simple question and answer format, the author repeats phrases again and again–just the right amount of text and repetition for a twelve-month-old. That children and animals hide behind the flaps on each spread only increases the pleasure of having the answer to the question answered. We also liked the introduction of rhyme. Rhymes are pleasant to hear and make a child curious about playing with words themselves.
    Activities
This is a book your child can grow with. She may enjoy the simple reading of the question and the revealing of the answer when you lift the flap. Have fun pointing out the other animals on the page, not just the one hidden behind each flap. Later your child may enjoy naming the animals or repeating the refrain "I can!" Children get a great deal of pleasure from memorizing a line in a book or naming an object on a page, as there is pride in learning and comfort in hearing something again and again. This book could also be used for play. Could you use it to help your child hop like a rabbit or stalk like a lion?
