Created just for the children in the Raising Reader program, this anthology pulls together five stories from five Maine authors and illustrators. With so many talented children’s book creators living in the state of Maine, it was not difficult to find five stories that will grow with a child. From the classic Robert McClosky’s ‘One Morning in Maine’ to the latest picture book illustrated by Scott Nash, these stories make great read alouds. They will also make good beginner books as a child learns to read on their own. By working with Maine talent, Raising Reader hopes to show the wider community of Mainers who care about great books for children.

raising readers has partnered with the publisher, The Penguin Group on this anthology of Maine authors and illustrators.

They are as follows:
'Little Loon and Papa' by Toni Buzzeo and illustrated by Margaret Spengler; 'Rainy Day!' by Patricia Lakin and illustrated by Scott Nash; 'Fluffy and Baron' written and illustrated by Laura Rankin; 'If I Built a Car' written and illustrated by Chris Van Dussen; 'One Morning in Maine' written and illustrated by Robert McCloskey.

The Selection Committee is again delighted to offer five great stories for five year-olds. One of Maine's many advantages is that many children's book authors and illustrators make their home here. Each story here is either written or illustrated by a Mainer. From the tale of a timid loon to a group of adventurous crocodiles to an imaginitative boy to a Maine classic, the committee thinks children will find something to love in all these stories. The stories were chosen, also, to grow with a child into their school years.
