Why raising readers Has Selected This Book
This classic book was chosen for so many reasons. We loved the use of made-up words like "hatberry" and "shoeberry." The book is designed so that you have fun with the sounds of words rather than the words themselves. As many of the Raising Reader selection committee are in the medical profession, we were also pleased that the book celebrates healthy eating. Lastly, we love that each time you open the book, you find a new funny detail in the illustrations. Children will grow with this book and may choose to look at the delightful illustrations on their own.
    Questions
The pages of this book are perfect for going back with your child to look at the pictures. Together you can find the butter on the lily pads and toast hanging from trees. You can talk about how the book makes you hungry for fruit which may help your child desire healthy foods.
    Activities
When you are at the supermarket or farmer's market with your child, point out the different berries and ask your child to remember the berries in the story. With your doctor's okay, include fresh or frozen berries in your child's diet and relate them to the book while eating.
