Welcome!

Welcome back to the raising readers monthly newsletter!

The raising readers website is a wonderful resource for parents, doctors, nurses, daycare providers and anyone else interested in books, literacy and health.

Each month we send out information on raising readers happenings, fun literacy and book-related activities for children, and suggestions for reading and using books with children.

Why Read?

As a parent, you are your child's first teacher!

Reading, rhyming, and talking to your child does not take a lot of time but is very important to your child's growth and development.

Research results show that children who are read to from birth are more likely to be ready to learn by the time they go to school.

A "Recipe" for Reading Aloud:

    • Read to your child every day, starting at birth, even if it's for a few minutes at first. Your child will love being held and cuddled while you read. And it makes reading an important part of every day life.

    • If you have other children, make reading time a special time for all of you to read together. As your child gets older, let her choose the book you read.

    • Let others help read to your child: brothers, sisters, relatives, and daycare providers.

"Ingredients" needed to read:

    • just books, your child, and you!
