raising readers Library Promotion

In May 2005, the first group of five year olds "graduated" from raising readers. In recognition of that event and to promote a life-long love of reading, raising readers launched a promotion to encourage children to seek out their local library. And if they are eligible, what better time to get their first library card if they don't already have one?
Each year, a special book of stories by five Maine children's authors developed by raising readers is given at the five-year well-child visit with this purpose in mind. On the inside cover of the book is a small removable card certifying that the child has been "Raised to be a Reader,” which the child can present to his local librarian.
While at their local library, families and children can check out ALL the special raising readers 5 year old books - seven of them to date! Because the books are developed exclusively for raising readers and not available for sale, every public library in Maine has been sent a copy for all to enjoy.
Along with Library Card Sign-up Month in September, raising readers encourages families and children to seek out their libraries all year long. According to the American Library Association Website September is "a time to remind parents and children that a library card is the most important school supply of all".
